Holt Reserves (2) v (0) Thorpe Village Reserves
After losing the previous six games, Holt were in desperate need to get their season back on track. Holt this week welcomed Thorpe Village Reserves, who had already beaten Holt 3-1 earlier in the season. Holt were pleased to see Vince Peart back in goal, after missing several games and also back from a bad ankle injury was Adam Smith. Luke Williamson was called into the team, after impressing with the A-Team and Robert Rust-Andrews got his first start after being in the squad for a number of games. Holt started the game with the basic 4-4-2 formation, with manager Chris Cude and Bret Squire leading the attack. Daniel Rouse was back on the bench, after missing two games due to illness. Holt looked the better of the two teams and had most of the possession from the start. However Holt were struggling to find the back of the net, which has been missing for several weeks. Many chances came and fell for the Holt players and you could see and feel the frustration of the players, with maybe some lack of confidence creeping in. Adam Smart and Robert Rust-Andrews were linking up well down the left, but their final balls always seemed to let them down. At half-time the scores were level at 0-0 and Holt could not believe that they were not in the lead, after having the majority of possession in the half. Holt were told to start encouraging each other and believe in themselves and surely if they went and played the same, then the goal would finally come. Holt went into the second half and did continue to add pressure on the Thorpe players. This time they were rewarded with the good determination and Robert Rust-Andrews was the player who scored, with a powerful run down the left and scoring for his efforts. Holt did not sit back like an England team and wanted to kill the game off. This could have been a totally different story, if it was not for Vince Peart, who pulled of a great save, that even David Seaman would have been proud off. Bret Squire and Martin Alford had to be replaced due to injuries and on came Daniel Rouse and Luke Williamson in straight swaps. Holt were struggling to kill the game off and in the last five minutes Adam Smart had to be replaced due to cramp and on came Mark Page in another straight swap. Adam Smith took over as captain and he turned into captain marvel, with a dazzling, mazy run, knocking back the years and finally rounding the keeper. A great goal and a great way to mark your return. A good display from Holt earned them the three points and it was about time too. A solid back four and keeper also earned a clean sheet. Man of the match goes to Adam Smith, who looked in fine form, despite missing over a month of football and scored a great goal, which he will never forget, or let you forget.
