HOLT UNITED entertained high flying Kirkley & Pakefield Reserves on Saturday with hopes of continuing the good football shown the week before. Holt were pleased to have striker Colm McGilway back in the side after his impressive early season form. Holt were dealt a blow after only five minutes when a mix up in the home defence allowed Kirkley to take the lead. Holt were playing well and were suitably rewarded after twenty minutes when, following a good move involving Jason Hawkins, McGilway set Kevin Moore free in the box to score with a low shot. Holt took the lead ten minutes later when a deep free kick from Hawkins was powerfully headed home by David Thompson. Chris Long, meanwhile, received a chest injury and was replaced by youngster Toby Blowers. Holt’s half time lead was increased ten minutes into the second period when Moore burst into the box only to be fouled. He took the resulting spot kick himself and blasted the ball home for his sixth goal of the season. Kirkley fought back and scored with a shot from the edge of the box. McGilway, having earlier lobbed narrowly over the bar after some excellent work by Blowers, beat his man in the box before calmly scoring at the near post. This 4-2 victory was a good all round performance with full backs Steven Thompson and Chris English looking solid. Philip Durham’s continued improvement was evident to all.
